What does lightweight mean to you? A chocolate bar, a smartphone, or maybe a key ring? As rule, these things weigh more than double our new Race Binding P49 (49 grams!). It’s not just the binding that is ground-breaking, though. In fact, it is the entire system with the DNA Pintech by Pierre Gignoux Race Boot, where the pins for the first time ever are located on the boot’s toe. This innovative system impressed the jury for the ISPO Awards 2018. The vote came in, and this boot-binding system was awarded Gold in the category “ski touring bindings.”

The new era of pin bindings begins now.

The question posed by our binding engineers was as simple as it was complex. “How can the frameless pin binding be further refined?” The DYNAFIT binding engineers took three years to truly answer this question. Out of that came a totally unique binding concept for ski touring racing.

The result: The interplay of pins and inserts was flipped on its head and thus enables an even simpler and quicker entry into the binding. The P49 binding consists of a significantly trimmed-down toe piece with two-sided entry guidance grooves. The pins are attached directly to the DNA Race Boot with a smooth, simple yet quite durable spring system.

The revolutionary boot-binding system also impressed the ISPO Award 2018 judges panel. They awarded the Gold Award to the PINTECH system (P49 binding & DNA PINTECH by Pierre Gignoux) in the category Ski Touring Bindings. This is what jury member Jan Stala from Sweden said: “With a surprising 49 grams, this Pin Binding has achieved a new level. By changing the 'perspective' of the toe piece, the P49 improves entry and performance.”

Ski onto the ground, click into the front -- the Pintech’s unique selling point

The minimalist P49 weighs a mere 49 grams or less than half the prior ISMF-certified Low Tech race binding 2.0 for ski mountaineering racing. Even the weight of the carbon-fiber DYNAFIT DNA Race Boot by Pierre Gignoux could be slashed further. At 570 grams (size 27) it remains the lightest ski mountaineering race boot in the world today. Both the P49 and the DNA by Pierre Gignoux are manufactured according to the regulations of the ISMF (International Ski Mountaineering Federation).

The transition from downhill mode to climbing represents a time critical component in ski mountaineering. This is where the new Pintech System scores big. It just takes a simple one-handed motion to move the toe pieces together and at the same time the levers down so you can step out of the binding for skinning up. What makes this especially convenient is that the ski is then in the racer’s hands, allowing speedy transitions to skins. Ski back on the ground, click into the front, click into the back and, in just a few seconds, off you go again in race mode.

The P49 together with the DYNAFIT DNA by Pierre Gignoux Race Boot are already being used by our athletes in training and competitions. Here are the first comments from our race camp about it:

Oriol Cardona Coll
“The weight of the P49 is phenomenal! But what I like most is the very easy and smooth step in.”

Javier Martín de Villa
“This is a milestone in the development of pin bindings. The Pintech System will change the whole industry and the way people explore the mountains on ski.”
