The DYNAFIT X4 Story

The DYNAFIT X4 Story
Summer 2010: Five athletes want to find out what DYNAFIT stands for. There are just two goals: to fulfil a sporting challenge and to find unusual product solutions for the first DYNAFIT summer collection. With lightness, speed and a few friends they head off: for four days, to four neighbouring countries, to four peaks, with four friends. The DYNAFIT
athletes Benedikt Böhm, Schorsch Nickaes, Elmar Tritscher, Javier Martin de Villa and Pete Swenson complete 13,200 metres of altitude in four days. On foot, on bikes and on skis.
On 8 October at 6 am the X4 story begins. The five sportsmen plan to climb Zugspitze (2,962 m), Similaun (3,599 m), Ortler (3,905 m) and Piz Palü (3,901 m) in four stages. They will cover the distance between the mountains by bike. The basic idea for the X4 trip is for the athletes to complete the four stages and reach the peaks by “fair means“ i.e. with no aids. They will have to conquer more than 400 kilometres between Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. They will be on the go for over 12 hours per day. The plan will involve carrying gear for long periods as well as changing from biking to running and vice versa. On the Ortler in Italy the expe- rienced ski mountaineers have to accept defeat. Large volumes of snow prevent them from reaching the peak. After four tough stages and the final success at the Piz Palü peak in Switzerland, the DYNAFIT team reaches its destination at Morteratsch.
But that’s not the end of the X4 story. Apart from the sporting challenge, what’s really important to the DYNAFIT athletes is to translate practical experience into product innovation. In this way the first products in the DYNAFIT Summer Collection were put through the toughest tests. The collection aims to have perfect product qualities and to be tailored specially to alpine requirements. An athletic cut, long-lasting robustness, and functionality are the focus for apparel and equipment. As soon as they arrived home, the athletes began the process of discussing
the details with the product designers, judging the fabrics, and optimising styling.

The athletes are united not just by their motivation in sport. They‘ve all been working for several years for the ski touring brand in different countries.
  • Benedikt Böhm, is a Director of DYNAFIT. He is a former member of the German national ski mountaineering team and has been doing speed ascents around the world every year since 2005. Böhm is responsible for DYNAFIT’s ski division.
  • Schorsch Nickaes is Sales & Product Manager with DYNAFIT and is also responsible for product development. As a former member of the German national team and current coach of the youth ski mountaineering team, he well knows the demands placed on equipment by the sport.
  • Austrian Elmar Tritscher, has had a passion for endurance sports for over 15 years and has been Sales Manager at DYNAFIT since 2010.
  • The active ski touring competitive sportsman Javier Martin de Villa of Spain coaches the Spanish ski touring national team and has been the Manager of the International DYNAFIT team for several years.
  • Pete Swenson works for DYNAFIT as Brand Activation Manager in North America. The American was part of the mountain biking elite in the 1990s and was three times US ski mountaineering champion.
