Speed record on Mustagh Ata, at 7,546m!

8/23/05

The start of a new era in high-altitude ski mountaineering...

The goal was to ascend the summit as fast as possible and then descend even faster back to base camp. The team consisted of two German Dynafit sportspersons Benedikt and Sebastian Haag, together with the internationally acclaimed high-altitude climber Matthias Robl, who died in a tragic accident in 2008. They needed an unheard of 10 hours 41 minutes for the 3,100 metres of ascent to and subsequent descent from Mustagh Ata (7,546m) in the Chinese Kuen-Lun mountains. Generally expeditions would require four days for such a tour. The trio reached the summit on August 23 after only 9:25 hours at temperatures of -35 degrees. After another 1:16 hours for the descent, they were back at base camp. A new speed record! This new style of mountain climbing requires a perfect harmony of physical fitness and high-tech products.
