Snow Leopard Projects

Cooperation between Dynafit and the Snow Leopard Trust

Leading by example
DYNAFIT supports the Snow Leopard Trust.

It roams with great elegance through its home territory, the last great wilderness of our planet. The Himalayas and Karakorum, Tien Shan and Pamir, Hindu Kush and Altai - for more than a million years the spectacular mountain ranges of Central Asia have provided a harsh yet magnificent home for this unique carnivore.

The snow leopard (Latin: Uncia uncia) has adapted perfectly to its high-mountain, rugged environment. It uses its 100cm tail to keep balance skilfully on escarpments or along steep crags, and chooses exposed high rocks as a vantage point to spot its prey. Its paws are padded with fur even underneath, to give ideal protection against the extreme cold. The paws function as natural snowshoes – the snow leopard can stalk for hours across steep snowfields without sinking into the snow. Wherever it ranges, this high-mountain big cat is fast, tenacious, supple, dynamic, and has great power reserves for the final attack. It can carry three times its own weight, roams across vast regions, and prefers to live above the tree line, at heights of 5,500 metres and more.

The snow leopard embodies the spirit and values of our brand more so than any other animal. That's why a stylised design of the head was chosen to represent DYNAFIT. But this emblem is more than just a logo. It is a figure to identify with, a symbol of all the characteristics and skills needed to live and survive in the high mountains.

And yet the snow leopard is threatened with extinction!
Poachers can gain a lot of money from selling the beautiful pelt for fur coats. The bones have a ready market for the purposes of traditional Chinese medicine. Local farmers and herders kill the leopard out of revenge, because it occasionally – when pushed from its traditional hunting grounds – attacks domestic animals and the farmers suffer economic loss. The loss of its natural prey such as Himalayan blue sheep, wild sheep, Siberian ibex, and musk deer is another reason that the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) classified the snow leopard as "highly endangered" in 1972. Being a solitary animal that lives in very remote regions, it is very difficult to get a reliable estimate of the population. Experts generally agree there are between 4,500 and 7,500 animals living in the wild. But the number may be falling continually.

We at DYNAFIT see an urgent need to act to save the snow leopard, and have set ourselves the long-term goal of doing all within our power to protect the species and its original home environment. The first step is to learn more about the behaviour and territory of this animal and fill the large gaps in our knowledge. The local inhabitants, enthusiast sportspersons, and animal lovers from across the world will all learn more about this unique animal and the threats to its survival.

So that this work is done in a professional and sustainable manner, we support the Snow Leopard Trust (SLT) with donations, gifts, and our international PR work.

The SLT was established in 1981 and is the leading institution internationally for the protection of, and research into the snow leopard. Among other activities, it is supporting several long-term studies and cooperates with research teams across the 12 countries which together cover almost all the snow leopard's range. The SLT gets funding for its projects from donations, grants, events, and the sale of handmade products available on their website www.snowleopard.org.
